Ladies and gents it’s time to take a moment and have a serious talk. Domestic violence is an issue that affects millions of American women each year. It’s a problem that occurs all over the country yet little is said about it. There are all forms of domestic abuse but the kind that’s the least talked about is financial abuse. (using finances as a tool of power and control.) The number one reason victims remain with their financial abusers is that they lack the financial knowledge and resources to go out on their own.
Thankfully, Allstate has created the Purple Purse Program to help spread awareness of financial domestic abuse. The campaign gives those affected the knowledge and resources they need to gain the confidence to free themselves! October is officially Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Purple Purse Program is going strong.
The program ignites fundraising for more than 140 national, state and local domestic violence organizations. Allstate Foundation Purple Purse is asking you to join the Challenge to support a nonprofit near you. Supporters can visit PurplePurse.com starting September 2 to make a donation through October 3. In addition to community/local contributions raised, The Allstate Foundation is investing nearly $650,000 in the Purple Purse Challenge – the more donations each nonprofit gets, the more it can compete for Allstate Foundation incentive funding.
To turn any purse into a Purple Purse, The Allstate Foundation is widely distributing Purple Purse charms so you can show your support and attach to your favorite bag year round. They are being distributed with inspiring survivor stories through Purple Purse Challenge participants and Allstate agency owners.
Take Action
I challenge you to stand up against domestic violence during the month of October and help to pass a purple purse onto someone you think should learn more about the issue. Whether you add a tassel to your purse or not, you’ll be helping the millions of women affected by financial abuse each year. Do your good deed for the day and visit Purple Purse’s website and facebook page to start helping others today!
If you or someone you know need immediate help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224.

I’ve used Allstate for everything for over a decade. Nice to know they support such a good cause… of course my agent just sends me magnet calendars with his face on them…lol

I guess I never thought of financial abuse. I’m not sure I would even know how to help someone but glad to have this info with the numbers.

It’s wonderful that they’re bringing more awareness to this, because there are so many out there that are being controlled by their money, yet it’s an issue that is often overlooked. It’s not always spouses either. I’ve often seen grown-ups financially take advantage of their elderly parents. My aunt was financially abused by her own daughter since she wasn’t knowledgeable when it came to finances (she sadly passed away earlier this year from ovarian cancer).

i never really thought about financial abuse being a part of the problem

It’s a popular topic in the news right now. The circumstances that have brought it to the forefront are unfortunate, but I’m grateful that people are becoming more aware of domestic violence and willing to make a change.

I was definitely one of the 8 in 10 that had not heard much about this. Abuse is sad on so many levels and I had no idea about the financial abuse. It’s good to be educated and take a stand!

Financial abuse is all too real, and I’m very happy people are starting to see it now. It is terrifying feeling trapped without any means of survival. I’m glad Purple Purse is around.
Jennifer @ Mom Spotted says
Financial abuse is definitely real. I know several people stuck in bad situations because they feel they are financially unable to do anything about it.

What an awesome program! I’ve saw this on my news feed earlier but didn’t catch the whole story. Glad I did! I’m really happy about that.

I accept your challenge. What a terrific program! Unfortunately, I do know women who have been victims of domestic abuse.
