It’s Winter break time at my children’s school and every year they give their classmates something fun for Christmas time. Normally I go with the ever popular reindeer food idea. However, this year I wanted to do something new, fun and unique. I noticed a new Christmas tradition has been popping up that gives kids who don’t live in a home with a chimney or will be away for Christmas a way to let Santa in without any worries, it’s called a Santa Key.
The premise behind the Magic Santa Key, is to help Santa get inside without the need for a chimney or find your family no matter where they may be for Christmas. Leave the key out on Christmas Eve with the milk and cookies ( perhaps a few carrots for the reindeer) and Santa will be able to visit your family chimney or not!
Since we live in a warmer climate where chimneys aren’t a home staple, the Magic Santa Key is a great way to keep Santa’s magic alive. It’s also a fun way to ensure that he will always find your family, even if you aren’t home for Christmas.
To make your Magic Santa Key here is what you’ll need:
- Magic Santa Key Printable (free download below)
- 110lb Cardstock Paper
- Magic Keys ( I used a combo of bronze, silver, and copper for my keys. Each pack comes with 20 keys and 2 designs, the swirl and the crown designs shown above)
- Believe Charms
- Key Rings
- Red Ribbon (3/8th in)
- Gift Tags with Tassels
- Scissors
- Hole Punch
I created the below Magic Santa Key printable to go along with my keys and am offering it here as a FREE download! I suggest using at least 110lb card stock for printing since it won’t bend when the key it attached. This photo shows my watermark but the downloadable version will be watermark free and ready to use.
I also added a gift tag to the back of the poem so I could write which kid it was from. The tassels mentioned in the supply list came with the ones I used which were great! They are tough cardboard and added a vintage touch.
Making the keys was easy and fun! Of course, I had to make 50 of them so that took a bit of time but I love the way they turned out. They would also make great gifts for friend and family or a unique present for your elf to deliver to your family if you’ve recently moved!

We have a Santa key but I love this one so much better. It’s very charming and elegant and would last for years.
This is awesome, thanks so much for the printable!
I LOVE this idea!! We live in Florida and always told them Santa used a key! Printing and using!
thank you for sharing your beautiful key verse note card! I bet that I have looked for over 45 minutes at a hundred of them — all wanting me to purchase or subscribe in order to get the printable. You are a doll for offering it free. Thanks again!
You are so welcome! I love hearing how much something I create helps someone else!
Could you make a printable for homes that do not have a fireplace? I really appreciate the one you shared and would like one to look just like it with a little different wording. Instead of you can shimmy down our chimney…..We do not have a chimney, Santa so please come through our door….
I would appreciate it so much.
Thanks!
Hi Jennifer, I would be MORE than happy to do that for you! Send me an email at Rachel@jetsettingmom.com and let me know what you’d like it to say 🙂
how do I print this please?
Hi Jerilynn!
You can print the printables by clicking on the links above. You should be able to download the PDFs that way and print at home 🙂
I love this idea! I was hoping to make some for my church Sunday school class, would you be able to change the wording?
