Picnic Tips
Hosting a picnic in the park is a wonderful way to celebrate Mom. Of course there are a few ways I’ve found to make sure everything goes smoothly and you don’t end up with a soggy sandwich.
1- Grab a basket that’s insulated
With so many picnic basket choices, it’s easy to go with the traditional pale or wicker basket, but I personally recommend packing an insulated basket. An insulated basket will make sure your food stays cold or hot and some even have areas for both cold and hot foods. You can add a cold ice pack or hot pad instead of worrying about bringing ice along and ending up with soggy food. Insulated baskets come in all different fun colors and patterns to fit your style and most offer zipper closures for extra travel protection.
2- Pack foods that travel well
Although a gorgeous bowl of ice cream may look great sitting on a picnic blanket, getting it there could be a nightmare. Make sure when packing your basket you pack liquids in tight containers, frozen foods in plastic containers, and if you are wanting a bit of cake, cutting it into slices first and then packing it makes it easier to travel and serve. For ice cream, I suggest pre-scooping it into large cupcake liners (paper or silicone) and freezing it the night before. This will also make it easier to serve and clean up.
3- Don’t forget the plates!
There’s nothing worse than sitting down to a picnic feast and realizing you forgot the plates or silverware. Pack these first into the bottom of your basket, that way they will be the last thing you take out when you’re ready to dine. Wrap plastic ware in a few paper towels and place them in a disposable bag so they easily stay together and your napkins don’t blow away as soon as you open your basket.
Taking Mom out for a picnic is a great way to create lasting memories she’ll always enjoy. Let me know how you’re picnic went!
