As a kid I have fond memories of rushing home after a long school day and being super excited about getting the chance to have one of my favorite snacks. I have always been a Yoo-hoo and Hawaiian Punch kind of kid so coming home to my favorite drinks was always fun. Now that I have kids of my own, I provide them with the same fun drinks I had as a child. Even though I’ve enjoyed these drinks for years, I had no idea that they were a part of the Dr Pepper Snapple Group family of brands! I was surprised to find out that not only were Yoo-hoo and Hawaiian Punch belonged to them but also other great brands like Mott’s Apple Juice and Mott’s Apple Grape Juice which I’ve been giving my kids since they were babies.
It’s so great to know that a brand like Dr Pepper Snapple Group is creating so many of my families loved drinks. Since school is back in session, I try to keep my kids foods interesting and fun. We love to make Hawaiian Punch, Yoo-hoo and Mott’s Apple Juice shaped ice cubes! The homemade ice cubes are great for many different snacks such as adding Yoo-hoo ice cubes to cereal for chocolate flavored milk, putting Hawaiian Punch ice cubes into a glass of water for a little flavoring or just having a refreshing Mott’s Apple Juice ice cube to suck on while playing outside. Yoo-hoo, Hawaiian Punch and Mott’s 100% juice Apple Juice and Apple Grape Juice all come in great travel sizes for packing in lunches or taking on trips.
With school in session and my kiddos spending more time sitting in the classroom then they did outside over Summer, we’ve turned to Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s Let’s Play Initiative for great ways to stay active and keep playing. They’ve come together with KaBOOM! and Good Sports to help provide the tools, places and inspiration to make play a daily priority. In an effort to maximize this initiative, Dr Pepper Snapple Group conducted a nationwide State Of Play survey in 2016 to uncover just how much play kids are getting and what’s preventing more active daily play. The survey revealed many interesting facts such as:
- Only 33 percent of children are participating in active play daily.
- Of the kids who do play daily, there is a significant drop in daily active play at age 5, when many children enter Kindergarten, from 50% of 4-year-olds to only 31% of 5-year-olds.
- Survey findings show that kids are spending time on other things:
- Television and devices still reign supreme with parents saying their children spend an average of 30 minutes or more each day:
- Watching television (78%)
- Playing on/using a computer or electronic device (71%)
- Television and devices still reign supreme with parents saying their children spend an average of 30 minutes or more each day:
- This year, 64 percent of parents said busy schedules stand in the way of more active play for their children, up from only 56 percent in 2015.
Since it seems that simple play may be in danger of extinction, Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s Let’s Play Initiative has created an awesome website to help parents, care givers, teachers and kids themselves find fun ways to play and stay active with LetsPlay.com. We’ve been using the website to come up with fun new play ideas and my kids have been loving it! My personal favorites are the outdoor relay race and family puppet show ideas.
How does your family keep playing when not in school? Let me know!
