With Summer here and our family being plagued with heat waves and mosquitoes the size of a quarter, I am always looking for new ways to keep my kids safe and bite free over the Summer months. I have a 2 year old who gets heat rash like crazy and who tends to well up like a raspberry any time she is bitten by a bug so I wanted to seek some medical advice to help keep her safe outdoors.
Since it’s never an easy task taking all my kids with me to the doctor, I opened my computer and reached out to a local physician through Amwell. Amwell is an online medical service that gives you the ability to see a medical professional 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no appointment needed. Doctors on Amwell are board certified, with an average of 15 years in practice so you know you’ll always get an experienced expert. Best of all, I can do it right from the comfort of my own home!
I told the doctor about my daughter’s reaction to bug bites and her heat rash and he was able to give me some great advice as to how to prevent both issues from happening or getting worse.
Apply bug spray before sunscreen
I never thought about this before the Amwell doctor mentioned it but it makes a LOT of sense. He said to make sure to apply bug spray to the skin before applying sunscreen. This way the bug spray will actually stick to the skin where as if it’s applied on top of the sunscreen, it won’t be effective due to the sunscreen acting as a barrier on the top of the skin.
Use Cortisone cream that has 1% Cortisone
The doctor stated that most over the counter Cortisone creams are 1%, which is the recommended dosage for helping bug bites to heal and to keep them from being too itchy. He said that it was imperative that NO Cortisone cream or Cortisone steroid be placed on the face or forehead as this could cause serious irritation or inflammation, however from the neck down was fine.
Let babies party with their pants off
To help prevent heat rash, let little ones run, play, or sit in a stroller without their pants on to create less friction and moister build up in the heat. The doctor mentioned that the dryer you can keep your baby, the less of a chance they are to develop a heat rash.
Use a fan to keep baby cool
The doctor suggested using a small fan that can clip onto your stroller to help keep your baby as cool as possible while outdoors. He mentioned that they use one that has foam blades so that if the baby does happen to touch the fan, there won’t be any worry of an injury.

I never thought to use the bug spray before the sun screen , but will do, I also don’t mind letting the little ones play in the water naked, I think it helps them to keep cool and relaxed, I always make sure they have plenty of water to drink, and even when we do go out , they have a hat on to help protect the head..
