Being a military family we travel a lot, and I mean a LOT! Not living near family we are always heading somewhere and road trips can be “interesting” with 3 kids all under the age of 7. Needless to say, traveling anywhere with a baby poses it’s own challenges let alone with 2 other kiddos. Since my hubby normally insists on being the driver, I’m the one who’s constantly looking behind us to make sure the kiddos are doing OK and the baby is happy. It would be so much more relaxing if I were able to check on my kids without having to spin around a million times every 30 minutes. Well, thanks to Garmin’s new babycam I can do exactly that! The babycam is a wireless, Bluetooth enabled camera that pairs with the new Drive series of Garmin navigation devices to give you a constant eye on what’s going on in the back of your car.
We’ve been using he Garmin babycam now for a few weeks and it’s really made traveling with our kids easier, especially at night with it’s night vision feature. The babycam can be purchased separately or as a bundle which includes the new Garmin 50 personal navigation device. The babycam offers a wide variety of features, but a few of my favorite are:
- Can be installed to view a child in a rear-facing or front-facing car seat
- Upon arrival at the destination, a message will prompt driver to check for passengers before exiting the vehicle
- Can easily switch between babyCam view to navigation mode with the click of a button
- Video camera with night vision provides a clear image in bright and low-light conditions, without disrupting your child and helpful alerts reminds drivers to check for passengers before exiting the vehicle
- More than one babycam camera can be added to your Garmin personal navigation device for multiple views
Setting up the babycam was super easy which was great. The camera comes pre-paired with the navigation device if you purchase the babycam bundle so you can use it right out of the box. I did have to update the Garmin Drive 50’s software through my computer before putting it in my car. The babycam easily installed on the headrest of where our baby’s car seat is and once ready to go, I just plugged in the Garmin Drive 50 and it was as simple as that! Total install time, including the computer update was 15 minutes.
The picture from the babycam is clear and precise and certainly allows me to see what my baby is doing. There is also a night vision mode which I mentioned earlier that gives yu a great view in the dark. This is really helpful on long car rides at night so you can see if baby is sleeping soundly or not. You can also easily customize the settings for your camera through the Garminf Drive 50 as well as access other helpful features such as:
- Driver alerts for increased awareness, including upcoming sharp curves, school zones, speed changes and more
- Garmin Real Directions™ feature guides like a friend, using landmarks and traffic lights
- Find new and popular restaurants, shops and more with Foursquare®
Overall we have had a great experience with the Garmin babycam! It’s been a wonderful help on keeping an eye on my kids while we travel long or short distances. I wish I would have had this as a first time mom. We all know how nervous we get when our babies start crying while we are driving and we can’t help them feel better or see what’s wrong. If you’re looking for the perfect way to monitor your kids in the car, keep an eye on your new baby or have a pet that rides along with you that you’d like to monitor, the Garmin babycam Bundle is a great choice!
You can purchase your own Garmin babycam Bundle on Garmin’s website.

I wish I would have had this with my newborns! I rode in the backseat with my son until he was 5 months old!

This is pretty cool. Mine are too old for it, but I wish it was around when they were babies. I love that it’s not just a baby cam, and has other useful features, too.
