It’s that time of the season where we dig out that big box of seasonal decor and pick through what we want express out holiday love with. For me, I get bored of the same thing every year so I like to add a few things to my collection to change it up a bit. This is a good and bad thing. I love going shopping for new holiday decor but that also means I end up with a larger stash then I had the year before. Through out my years of decor collecting I’ve learned a few things about creating the perfect holiday scene in your home and how to keep it simple. Take a look at my top 3 tips to decking your halls this season that will leave you sane and loving your indoor spread of cheer!
1) Choose a theme and stick to it
There’s nothing more important when decorating then picking a theme and sticking to it! You’ll cut down on lots of miss-matched clutter and you’ll be able to tell a story through your decor picks that will make sense. If you have a few themes you like and can’t pick just one, consider theme decorating different rooms in your house instead of putting all your ideas together in one space. This will allow you to incorporate each of your fun ideas without making it look like a holiday bomb went off in your home.
2) Set a budget & make a list – no more impulse buys!
I am the biggest sinner when it comes to impulse buys, especially with holiday decor. That adorable elf that’s been staring at me while I was looking at the wreaths will most likely “fall” into my cart and make his way home with me if I don’t stop myself. Combat impulse buys and save yourself money all while sticking to the theme you chose by setting a decor budget and making a list. Having a budget will help to keep you on track and a list will help you feel like you are in the store for a reason instead of just perusing the isles. A trick I use on myself is adding up my possible purchases as I go through the store with my phone’s calculator. This makes me feel like I’m able to see if I REALLY need that cute elf.
3) Sometimes simple says more
It can be easy to go a bit over board when you have a variety of items you’ve fallen in love with. Try to choose a few of your favorite pieces that fit the best together and use those to bring out your holiday charm. Sometimes a simple candle and a few willow branches are all you need to create a beautiful center piece!
Do you have a theme for your holiday decorating this year?

I’m really not feeling the decorating bug, so I need these tips. Simple can be so much more than complicated. I am setting the date for my kids for a day when my daughter is home from boarding school and following these tips! Thanks

We love World Market. I would love to pick a stylish theme but we seem to go with a comfy, family Christmas theme each year!

Those really are great tips. A lot of times we get so caught up in all the hustle and bustle, we overspend and tend to collect clutter and overdo it.

We are empty-nesters now, but we still decorate some when we have Christmas at our house. One thing we do is get out all of the saved Christmas decorations that our kids & grandkids have made over the years & tape them on the walls of the rooms where the festivities are being held. Your budget tip is a good one, because I used to go over thinking I always needed more, BUT simpler is better!

Great tips! Usually, I over-do. Between things I’ve bought and things I’ve inherited, I have too much. I just cleaned out my mom’s apartment and had to move her to a nursing home. So, this year, all I’ve had time or energy for is the tree. It’s a little too simplified..kind of bleak looking actually lol, oh well, next year I’m going for something in between pitiful and my usual “red and green as far as the eye can see” look.
