Ladies and gents it’s time to take a moment and have a serious talk. Domestic violence is an issue that affects millions of American women each year. It’s a problem that occurs all over the country yet little is said about it. There are all forms of domestic abuse but the kind that’s the least talked about is financial abuse. (using finances as a tool of power and control.) The number one reason victims remain with their financial abusers is that they lack the financial knowledge and resources to go out on their own.
Thankfully, Allstate has created the Purple Purse: Pass It On Campaign to help spread awareness of financial domestic abuse. The campaign gives those affected the knowledge and resources they need to gain the confidence to free themselves! October is officially Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Purple Purse Campaign is in full swing.
How to participate
1,300 purple purses filled with domestic violence information and facts will be distributed throughout the U.S. The goal of the campaign is to have each of those purses passed from person to person around the country, sharing the information and making everyone aware of the affects domestic abuse has on women. Each time a purse is passed and logged on PurplePurse.com, the Allstate Foundation will donate $5 to YWCA up to $350,000!
If you don’t get your hands on one of the purple purses that are being passed around the country, you can still help by logging onto Purple Purse’s facebook page and sharing a virtual purple purse with others online. Your virtual purse code can be passed along just like an actual purple purse. You can even track where your purse has gone through the Purple Purse website!
Take action
I challenge you to stand up against domestic violence during the month of October and help to pass a purple purse onto someone you think should learn more about the issue. Whether you come by a real Purple Purse or pass one along online, you’ll be helping the millions of women affected by financial abuse each year. Do your good deed for the day and visit the Purple Purse’s website and facebook page to get your virtual purple purse on it’s way around the country and helping others today!
If you need immediate help, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224.
